While on assignment for @nytimestravel, the reporter Mike Ives hiked for 30 miles through the foothills that encircle Shaxi, an ancient trading town in the southwestern Chinese province of #Yunnan. His plan: to follow vestiges of a trading route known as the Ancient Tea-Horse Road, or the Tea and Horse Caravan Trail. “But the journey was bound to be quixotic, and dehydrating,” Mike writes, because the road is just as much a historical concept as it is a physical entity. The photographer @adamjdean took this picture of a farmer working at a hillside farm on the edge of Mapingguan, a village that's home to China’s Bai ethnic minority group. Even in the remote setting pictured here, signs of change were everywhere: When @ニューヨーク・タイムズ journalists visited, Mapingguan had a new cellular phone tower, and other villages were flanked by newish-looking roads, power lines and wind turbines.
