Japanese collage artist Nao Watanabe (@nanaopon) takes an intricate approach to animated GIF creation, layering together Dadaist collages filled with cutouts of fashion models, text and shapes before bringing them to life. “When I was in my teens, my favorite artists were (Jean-Michel) Basquiat, Genta Kosumi, and (German photomontage artist) Hannah Höch,” says Nao, who lives in Tokyo. “My mother is a calligrapher, my father works in television production and my brother is a copywriter, so I’m always being inspired by the creatives around me.” After beginning to experiment with collage art in 2009, she’s been taken with the medium, displacing catwalk models with glossy magazines and situating them in surreal graphic collages. “I find great pleasure in the process of transforming things that already exist into something completely different,” she explains. “Even walking through flea markets looking for vintage magazines is one of the many joys of creating collages.”
