Facebook just opened up Area 404 -- a 22,000 square foot hardware lab in Menlo Park, CA. "This lab allows us to do design, prototype, and testing in the one facility now, and that's a great asset for Facebook," Mikael Greaves, mechanical and power manager at Facebook, said to CNBC. The new space will be divided into an electrical engineering lab and prototype workshops. Greaves said the lab will employ eight to 10 full-time workers, but there is space for up to 80 engineers.

Translation: Facebook may be known as a social media company, but it's strengthening its position in hardware.
