The Scandinavian belief in elves, trolls and monsters may have died down since the 19th century, but folklore is very much alive in Iceland. Dotted around the island are clues that local legends are still respected; roads split in two then re-unite to avoid a sacred spot, building projects are terminated when deemed to disturb the homes of the Huldufólk (the hidden people) and on the lips of the locals are tales waiting to be told about an acquaintance who once saw a strange creature. In a landscape haunted by howling winds, boiling geysers and fiery eruptions it's actually easy to see why anyone here could entertain the idea of hidden people and strange creatures lurking behind waterfalls.
