For five South Sudanese runners competing in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, “refugee” is an identity that has followed them for most of their lives.
In the face of a global refugee crisis, the 2016 Olympic Games are bringing together the first ever team of refugees. Ten athletes are set to compete in the Games and represent the millions of people displaced from their homes around the world, all united under a single banner. They are the nation of refugees. “Now, I have a mission to tell the world that we are refugees. We are human beings,” said Yiech Pur Biel, 21, one of the five South Sudanese runners competing on the Olympic Team Refugee.
The pangs of homesickness are still fresh for Biel’s Syrian teammates. They, along with their fellow athletes from Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, had only recently been uprooted by violence and conflict in their homes.
Life as a refugee has been at the core of the five runners’ identity for most of their days. Exiled from their homes for more than a decade, they represent a lost generation of stateless people. Unlike their fellow teammates from Syria, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, whose pangs of homesickness are still fresh, the South Sudanese runners are a testament to the long term and festering repercussions of violent conflicts that never end.
In this, the latest chapter in a special report on the world’s migrant crisis made in partnership with @msnbcphoto, Magnum photographer @newshatavakolian takes us to the athlete’s training facility in Nairobi and the Kakuma refugee camp in northwestern Kenya, “home” to the displaced five.
