L'artiste italien Guido Reni est mort #CeJourLa en 1642 à Bologne. Ferdinando Gonzaga, duc de Mantoue, lui commanda un cycle de peintures sur l'Histoire d'Hercule pour une pièce de la villa Favorita, près de Mantoue. Entreprise en 1617, cette série était achevée en 1621. Passée dans la collection de Charles Ier d'Angleterre puis dans celle d'Everhard Jabach, elle fut acquise par Louis XIV en 1662.
Ce tableau illustre l'enlèvement de Déjanire par Nessus. Selon Ovide (Métamorphoses, IX, 101-134), Hercule a épousé Déjanire après avoir vaincu Acheloüs et l'a confiée au centaure Nessus qui s'était offert à lui faire passer la rivière Évene. Amoureux de la princesse, Nessus tente de l'enlever mais Hercule atteindra le centaure d'une flèche envenimée du sang de l'Hydre.

The Italian artist Guido Reni died #OnThisDay in 1642 in Bologna. A cycle of paintings about the Feats of Hercules was commissioned by Ferdinando Gonzaga, duke of Mantua, for a room in the Villa Favorita, near Mantua. The series was begun in 1617 and completed in 1621. The paintings were acquired by Louis XIV in 1662, after previously being in the collections of Charles I of England and Everhard Jabach.
This painting here shows the abduction of Deianeira by Nessus. According to Ovid (Metamorphoses, 9.101–134), Hercules married Deianeira after defeating the river god Achelous. He entrusts her to the centaur Nessus, who had offered to carry her across the river Evenus, but Nessus tries to rape her. From the bank, Hercules mortally wounds the centaur with an arrow that had been dipped in Hydra's blood to make it poisonous.
