After years of dreaming and working hard for that Olympic dream, it comes down to one moment. One race. Or if you get through to the final, three races. Yesterday, on a very hot and sunny day, I competed at my first Olympics here in Rio in heat one of the 800m. There were 8 heats of eight, so 64 girls fighting for a place in one of three semi finals (so 24 spots) the first 2 in each heat and the next best 8 times overall would advance. It was always going to be tough, with all the best girls in the world wanting to make the final, and some incredibly fast times run this season even compared to other years. But I believed I could get through if I ran really well on the day, which of course was my aim. My training had been going really well, I had run PB's over 400m, 500m, 600m, 1000m, 1500m and 3000m this season (500, 600 and 1000m in training.) And after being a bit sick for the first couple of days I was in Rio, I was feeling back to normal by race day. It wouldn't be easy to get through, but it was possible and I would do my absolute best as I always do. Unfortunately though, our heat was the second slowest of the 8 heats so only the top two went through and I only came 4th. It was a messy race, because of the slower pace and it was very pushy in the first 300m, and I got knocked and spiked. I had to go quite wide in the race- trying to get into good position. I felt I positioned myself reassembly well but maybe should have gone to the front since the pace was slow and because of the bunching. We only went through in about 60 seconds and I then tried to accelerate in the last 150m but my body wouldn't go any faster. I was trying to not tense up and gave it everything, but I crossed the line in 4th, in 2.02... well off my PB of 1.59.06. I was absolutely gutted and am still really disappointed. But it was still such an honour to compete at my first Olympics and something I'll always treasure!!! Lots more races to come!! You can read the rest of this blog on my athlete FB page.
