Nathan Hall moved farming equipment on a plot of land that he rents to farm hemp with his business partner, Todd Howard, in Mallie, Kentucky. In 2014, after a ban of 60 years, Congress allowed certain states to begin farming industrial hemp. Nathan, a 33-year-old @yale MBA student who also studies environmental management (and briefly worked as a miner), was already exploring the idea of growing hemp, which was first cultivated in Kentucky in 1775. Today, with grants from companies like @patagonia, he and Todd are growing hemp on 6 sites in 4 counties — including 5 acres of reclaimed surface mine — and have big dreams to scale up. People in the region often say there will be no silver bullets, but rather “one thousand silver BBs” to replace lost coal jobs in #Appalachia. Nathan offers a variation: “We want to be a part of the silver buckshot,” he said, “that’s going to hopefully transform this region.” @mikebelleme took this photo while on #nytassignment in Kentucky.
