The word Sapphire comes from the Latin word for "blue," sapphirus. It is also thought to have been used to describe Lapis Lazuli in Ancient times.
Sapphire's range in colour and rarity from a dark, inky blue to shades of green, pinkish orange, yellow and colourless.
They have a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale.
