"Everything in the alpine desert is intensified. The sun can be unbearable during the day and the temperatures will drop below freezing each night. The dry air can sap the moisture out of anything that is exposed, and the lack of oxygen and water makes it impossible for vegetation and wildlife to flourish. Even though this area is harsh and difficult, it tends to be the most appreciated by visitors because it provides the first view of the whole mountain. For @agent1416 and I, the ability to see where we had come from and where we were going finally helped us comprehend the enormity and grandeur of Mt. Kilimanjaro." - @dustinross.photos
