Today's story is by Samuel Blackwood, a student campaigner at Fordham University.
The current economic system is inefficient. Carbon-fueled capitalism is not sustainable due to one simple fact: there is a limited supply of fossil fuels in the ground. While we are currently using fossil fuels to power our cars, houses, factories, etc, we are also destroying the environment around us. The polar ice caps are melting at an astounding rate, which is causing sea levels to rise, and in turn will result in the destruction of various cities, water aquifers and ecosystems. This is only one consequence of climate change.
I am currently working to get my university, Fordham University, to endorse the #PutAPriceOnIt campaign. Our representatives in Congress need to know that the next generation of voters support putting a price on carbon. They will either get this message or they will be fired. I am working for this purpose because I want to make sure that this world is put on the right track towards creating a more sustainable future for my generation and the generations to come.
Some of the effects of climate change are irreversible, but that does not mean we should not try and curb the problem as much as we can. Putting a price on carbon is one huge step we can take towards reining carbon emissions. This will incentivize investments in alternative energy. When we tackle climate change we are not just trying to save the world, we are working towards creating a better one.
