Photograph by @Thomas Peschak A school of pilot fish accompanies a whale shark as it cruises through the Gulf of Tadjoura off Djibouti. Their common name "pilot fish" comes from the old notion that these fish guide whale sharks (and other large sharks) through the oceans. Today we know that these fish seek shelter around the sharks and have nothing to do with navigation.
