“My favourite sporting memory? We were playing in the National Championships in Alabama and we had a pretty strong team that year. Prior to the final game we were given a set of uniforms. I think they were actually the guernseys from the able-bodied side because the shorts were really, really big. As luck would have it, my pair was the only one without a draw-string but that’s never an issue when you’re sitting in a wheelchair. After we won the match, we were cutting down the net and the ring was still at full height so we had blokes either side lifting us up. When it was my turn I grabbed onto the ring and pulled myself up like doing a chin up and my shorts fell completely off. There were about 500 people in the crowd who all cracked up laughing and I couldn’t work out what was wrong until I looked down. We had just won the National Championships so nothing was going to wipe the smile from my face. I still have a laugh about the whole situation. That’s what sport is all about - banter, lads and good times.”
