The Korean Harvest Moon Festival, called #Chuseok, is celebrated today! It is observed on the full moon ? (15th day) of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. As Korea was traditionally an agrarian society, Chuseok celebrates the agricultural fruits, particularly the rice harvest, and marks the beginning of autumn.

While a festive holiday, Chuseok begins on a solemn note as families gather to honour their ancestors. This 19th-century shrine painting depicts all the essential elements: the ancestral shrine hall, folding screen, and an offering table. The table is placed on a woven mat with three stylised characters of longevity, blessing, and happiness. This painting would have been used when holding the ceremony away from home or as a substitute for an ancestral shrine hall.
Usually the screen is left blank to affix the ancestor’s name. British Museum conservators detected dried pieces of rice on the landscape image, which indicates that paper strips with the ancestors’ names were attached using sticky cooked rice.

We’re celebrating #Chuseok with a 3-day festival, including a Friday late event tomorrow and a whole day of activities for all the family on Saturday. Follow the link in our bio to find out more.
