In response to the Enlightenment ideals in the 18th century, philosopher Edmund Burke created the concept of the Sublime. He saw in nature vastness and magnificence but also, terror. In keeping with Burke’s view, the Realist painter #GustaveCourbet created a series of paintings of the sea in the northern French resort of Étretat. In The Wave, the painter throws the viewer into a massive wave breaking at high tide. He heightens the sea’s power by removing a shoreline and any other anchor to dry land and safety.
