Mingi is an ancient traditional belief among the Omotic speaking Karo and Hamar tribes in southern Ethopian where a child is believed to be cursed because either their upper teeth grew first, were born out of wedlock or their tooth was chipped at childhood.

If a child is considered Mingi by the elders or their parents, they drowned in a river.

Since 2008, #OmoChild has rescued and cares for children from the Omo Valley, young girls and boys deemed Mingi (or "cursed") from certain death, offering them a loving, safe home and quality education, helping these children to become future leaders in their communities. Omo Child also works to raise awareness about the practice of Mingi and works to see it eliminated.

Yesterday I spent the afternoon at this amazing, giving NGO founded by Lale Labuko and his wife. Having worked in and visited many NGOs over the decades, I can share with absolute certainty Omo Child is truly unique, brilliant, nurturing.
