One of conceptual and performance artist Eleanor Antin’s best-known works, “100 Boots” is a work of mail art documenting the staged travels of 100 pairs of black rubber boots, which begin a picaresque adventure in California and end with a whirlwind excursion through New York. “100 Boots” was presented in 1973 as part of MoMA’s Projects series, created in 1971 as “a series of small exhibitions presented to inform the public about current researches and explorations in the visual arts.” This crucible for new art by emerging artists was the first program of its kind in the U.S., and it plays a key role in MoMA’s contemporary art programming. An installation by Keith Sonnier inaugurated the series; he and many other Projects series artists such as Chuck Close (1973), Nam June Paik (1977), and Laurie Anderson (1978) went on to international renown. “Projects 104: #NstioMosquito" opens tomorrow. See more great images of “100 Boots” at mo.ma/52exhibitions. 2 of #52exhibitions: “Projects: 100 Boots by Eleanor Antin,” 1973. #MoMAhistory #tbt
