I rarely post about being vegan.  However as @msevylynch recently reminded me, I'm coming up on 3 years since I stopped eating meat so it's about time I stopped hiding behind the excuse that "I'm pretty new to this". With that in mind there are some pretty big misconceptions about veganism which I'd like to touch on. Firstly, being vegan doesn't mean you hate humans. As a little kid I never understood why some people were treated differently to others. As I grew up I attended marches and got involved in charities. I donated money to causes to try and help people who were being persecuted or mistreated but I never considered the impact the food I ate had on people and creatures I couldn't see or talk to. After going vegan I started to learn about the ramifications of those choices and some of that information is truly heartbreaking. I think that is why vegans sometimes seem aggressive or 'militant'. They are so appalled at a system in which almost everyone is a victim (from the animals which are slaughtered in order to create the products, to the workers who are often economically enslaved into producing the products, finally to the consumers who are - usually unbeknownst to them - being poisoned and debilitated by consuming those products) that they can say things which, to most people, would seem pretty extreme. But in my experience, vegans are just like everyone else. Sure, there are some assholes but, like most people, largely they are nice folks who just want to be understood. The second thing I'd like to address - and the reason I'm posting this photo after my workout tonight - has more to do with my experience of being vegan thus far. Now I haven't tried being a female vegan yet (maybe in my next life) but I've got a few friends who are and from my perspective people seem to treat them with a mixture of interest and perhaps a touch of admiration. I'm sure it helps that they're all hot, sassy, articulate girls that you can't help but admire... As a guy, however, when you tell someone you're vegan the reaction is quite different!! -CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS- #vegan #veganguy #veggie #plantbasedmuscle #whatveganslooklike #vegangains #plantbased
