HT: Aston Villa 0-1 Newcastle United - An own goal by Tommy Elphick left Villa trailing Newcastle at half-time. Jonathan Kodjia almost made a breakthrough on four minutes when he burst down the right before cutting inside Ciaran Clark. As the striker unleashed a powerful left-foot drive, however, Clark recovered to make a crucial block. The visitors responded with a 30-yard Jonjo Shelvey free-kick which was comfortably saved by Pierluigi Gollini, although the keeper had to be alert when he kept out Matt Ritchie’s close-range effort after hesitation in the home defence. But Newcastle were ahead in the 28th minute, Elphick turning DeAndre Yedlin’s low cross from the right into his own net as he tried to cover the near post.
