"Abbey Mae is a certified therapy dog. She's been trained to know how to lay on a hospital bed and she's been trained to maneuver herself safely around wheelchairs/walkers. She's been trained to not touch anything around her without my go ahead while she's "on duty." But there's so many things that she does that I never trained her for. Not all dogs can love other people like they love their own people and not all dogs can emotionally handle the weird smells and sounds that are often associated with hospitals, hospice, etc. But Abbey, she's a gem. I've watched her nudge and kiss the hand of a person who has tried to take their own life - urging them to pet her and gently putting her paw on their knee for reassurance. I've sat with her as she's laid her head on a person's chest as they peacefully pass away. I've sat with her as people, who are in immense emotional pain and loneliness hug her and sob simply because "she is so kind." I can't even begin to explain what it feels like to have a dog that is willing to spend hours willingly letting complete strangers get in her face, pet her, hug her, lay on her and talk to her about their life. Abbey's "career" as a therapy dog has really just began and I know she'll let me know when she's had enough but for now, I feel so honored that I get to watch her work and I hope it'll make me a better person too. She'll always be ours and she'll always be tremendously loved by more than just "her people." We are so lucky to have her as part of our family. And if you see a therapy dog, always say hello.
