I came across this stunning photo of a woman in uniform from the 1940s.  I found that the woman, Lt. V. Rhodes, was a member of the WAAC, the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps.  The ladies of the WAAC were the first women other than nurses to serve in the ranks of the United States Army.  The WAAC was formed in 1942, and over 35,000 women applied for less than 1,000 open positions in the new military unit. The WAAC were trained in three major specialities to support the war effort: The brightest and nimblest became military switchboard operators; the women who had high mechanical and problem-solving aptitude became mechanics and armorers, repairing vehicles and weapons; the remaining recruits became drivers, postal clerks, stenographers, and cooks.  During World War II, nearly 150,000 American women served - most stateside but some traveled the world to Europe, North Africa, and the Pacific. The WAAC was disbanded in 1978 and the female units were integrated with existing units. This beautiful b&w photo lead me on an amazing history lesson this week so I celebrate Lt. Rhodes and her WAAC volunteers as my #WCW (via wikipedia and history.army.mil)
