It is a city of two faiths where the Rakhine Buddhists and Muslim Rohingya once co-existed calmly until the beginning of sectarian violence in 2012. The Buddhists continue to move freely to date but about 140,000 Rohingya Muslims have been sequestered behind checkpoints inside the Internally Displaced Persons Camps (IDP) run by the military and armed police.
