Though meltwater streams have always formed on the ice sheet, they're now showing up at higher and higher elevations, earlier than ever before. This year's melt season began in April—so early many scientists couldn't believe what they were seeing when the data began trickling in. In the past four years alone, the ice sheet has lost more than a trillion tons of ice.
