It’s a fact that has gone almost unnoticed outside defense circles: The #Pentagon is spending billions of dollars to develop what it calls autonomous and semiautonomous weapons, the kind of weaponry that, until now, has existed only in Hollywood and science fiction. These new weapons include robotic fighter jets, missiles that can decide what to attack and ships that can hunt for enemy submarines without any help from humans. Basically, they’re weapons that could kill on their own. Defense officials say they will help the U.S. maintain its military edge over China, Russia and other rivals, who are also pouring money into similar research. (So are allies, such as Britain and Israel). But scientists and activists are concerned that developing even the dumbest of intelligent weapons risks setting off a global arms race. @hlswift took this photo of Jacob Regenstein, an engineer, holding a fake rifle during a test of an autonomous drone on Cape Cod, in Massachusetts. #regram
