This jewelled hat badge from the mid-16th century shows St George slaying the dragon. St George’s armour is made up from carefully chosen diamonds which evoke the angular shapes of armour panels. The green dragon below George’s rearing horse is studded with green emeralds, and the frame of the badge is set with rubies. The enamelled background is a stunning example of the fine enamelwork being produced in Europe at this time, its shallow relief and vivid colours place St George in a wooded scene with a river and castle behind.
This type of badge would have been worn by men in 16th century Europe, especially those involved in the court of a king or queen. The designs of the badges could carry specific political or personal messages, and signal the status of the wearer.
