Photo by @FransLanting “Family” The announcement that the world’s largest marine protected area has been declared off Antarctica is a momentous occasion. It’s twice the size of Texas—600,000 square miles—and it will be protected from commercial fishing and mineral extraction for 35 years. We can all be happy about it, and so can every penguin living down there. I am delighted to post this image in honor of the people and organizations who made this protection happen. We salute you! But I also want to pay homage to the extraordinary birds who are dependent on wise decision-making on their behalf. In this classic image, which was featured on the cover of National Geographic, two emperor penguins reunite with their chick. I knew their behavior quite well, but the unforeseen gesture by the chick to lift its stubby flippers made this a truly priceless moment.
