Artist Antonio Canova was born in Possagno, Italy (Venetian region) on this day in 1757. Known for his famous marble sculptures, Canova also painted and designed the popular Tempio Canoviano (Temple of Canova) in his hometown. This sculpture was commissioned by British Colonel and art collector John Campbell and shows the moment Cupid awakens Psyche with a kiss. In 1802 he was assigned the 'Inspector-General of Antiquities and Fine Art of the Papal State', a position formerly held by Raphael.
