Abbie Trayler-Smith (@abbiets) has her #EyesOn the women of Iraq, and shares the story told to her by 23-year-old Yusra (pictured), who took refuge from ISIS fighters, just days after she gave birth to a daughter: “We could hear the bullets and bombs. I took my baby in my arms and my husband put us on his tractor and we ran away. We left with nothing; even the pot I was cooking in was still on the stove.”
For Abbie, a lifelong pursuit of photography began early, when her father, a television journalist, brought the work of legendary war photographer Philip Jones Griffiths to their home in Wales, and inspired a career that took her across Africa and the Middle East. Unlike many war photographers, she trains her focus on the experiences of civilians in conflict, rather than the combatants. “Surviving and keeping your family safe and coping with atrocities, are every bit as compelling as the actions of the fighters on the front line,” she says.
