Since early 2015, photographers have shot tens of thousands of images and logged hundreds of thousands of miles while on #nytassignment on the presidential campaign trail. @ericthayer, a freelance photographer who covered 2 previous campaigns, has traveled all over the country while documenting candidates on both sides. “This one has been non-stop,” he said of the 2016 race. The Republican field began with 17 candidates. @ericthayer took this photo of one of them, @sentedcruz, at the Onawa Library in Iowa on January 5. That day, #TedCruz was in the midst of a 6-day, 28-town bus tour through the state. 10 months later, we’re down to the final 2 candidates — and both of them are on ambitious tours to cities in various states today.
