“It’s no game”: This is #DavidBowie’s #surreal chess set created by Man Ray in 1945. Chess was a popular pastime among the Surrealists, but for Man Ray it was much more than a game; it was an important source of inspiration. He learnt the game under the guidance of Marcel #Duchamp (who eventually played professionally), and after creating his first chess set in 1920, developed increasingly abstract, geometric designs following his mandate, ‘Begin with Cézanne and terminate in endgame’.
