Soft corals called ‘sea pens’ - typically found in deep water - and a Blue Cod appear in the shallow waters of Fiordland, New Zealand. Here, tannin-stained surface water blocks sunlight and tricks animals into traveling to these shallower depths. This fragile ecosystem is protected within one of New Zealand’s many marine reserves, places that are permanently protected to ensure rich oceans for the future.
Most scientists state that at least 40% of the oceans must be protected to keep the planet healthy, but currently only about 3% of Earth’s oceans are protected; that means that we have lots more work to do!
