It was well below freezing. My hands were numb and my body ached from exploring the desert all day. I had seen dinosaur footprints preserved in sandstone, slot canyons that made me feel like I was walking through the middle of the earth, and when the sun finally set I could see our neighboring galaxies (like Andromeda) in the dark night sky.
There is no trail to get to this location so I planned to use Polaris the North Star to navigate my way back to the van, but shortly after this image was taken a huge storm rolled in. (Check out the clouds in the lower part of the sky). I spent the rest of the night hiking back in complete darkness, slipping on ice, climbing over sand dunes and trying to recall which hills I had passed earlier that day.
This is not something I recommend doing... but it's an adventure I will never forget!
