After a tumultuous and frightening week of political upheaval, my family had the timely privilege of staying for the weekend at the Ford estate in Rancho Mirage. The particular presence of former First Lady Betty Ford runs palpably through the house, her spirit itself, I believe, woven in the walls. I wanted to stand next to her, to take comfort in a legacy of forthright courage, of inspirational candor, of fierce belief in equality for women. I don't know what is coming next but I believe hope, more than hard work and some kind of optimism will be required.
