Bailey, this 2½-year-old #goldendoodle, lived a largely uneventful life on a block of brownstones in Brooklyn until one October morning. The day started simply enough: Her owner, Orna Le Pape, leashed her to a metal chair outside a coffee shop. But when another customer entered the cafe, Bailey jumped, startled. The chair crashed to the sidewalk, spooking her further. The #doodle bolted, dragging the chair, with Orna in pursuit. Bailey ran right past their house, and she kept going. For more than 2 days, Orna searched endlessly for Bailey. This story is nothing new: Every week, dozens of dogs and cats go missing in NYC. But for whatever reason, Bailey became a bit of a phenomenon. “I ran into absolute strangers who said they were going to church to pray for my dog,” Orna said. One of her friends had a theory: At a turbulent time, “everyone wants a lost dog found.” 60 hours after Bailey made a run for it, she found her way home, starving and dehydrated. She’d lost 8 pounds and her paw was bleeding, but she was intact. @demetrius.freeman photographed Bailey while on assignment in Brooklyn. #nytdood
