Photograph by @paulnicklen // A group of crabeater seals rest on a piece of sea ice that is wedged under a grounded ice berg along the West coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Crabeater seals are named for their supposed diet on crab but they actually do not eat crab at all. They eat krill which is the foundation species of the entire Antarctic food chain. A key part of the life cycle of krill is sea ice. When there are bad ice years, you get a lower production of krill. As the polar regions warm twice as fast as anywhere else, what does that mean for these fragile ecosystems?
