Second up in our @1granary Instagram takeover selection is this photograph, taken by @john__mccarty. “@maarten_van_der_horst entirely transformed the work of his friend and co-MA-Fashion-graduate @simonerocha_, more or less destroying her delicate designs by tying it to poles. One of the things they discuss in their interview is why Maarten decided to stop his label and pursue a career in styling instead. As he explains: “I just felt that when I was a designer, there was no room for mistakes.” Our fourth issue partially wants to propose that the industry should give emerging creative talent more breathing space to develop themselves and go through trial-and-error. Those who create are rare, and we should be patient and encouraging when they are just starting out and prone to fail. It takes a lifetime to make a body of work and to realise one’s true worth.”
