It’s one thing to be 15 years old and just trying to pass 9th grade. It’s another to also be a transgender teen and activist, lobbying to the Michigan State Board of Education for the safety of LGBTQ teens. Add this to Corey Maison’s (@coreymaison) extensive anti-bullying work, and you have one extraordinary person — though Corey won’t readily admit it.
“I wish people would see me as an ordinary teenage girl that happens to be transgender, and is confident and stands up for what is right,” says Corey. “I wish they would see someone who was bullied, made it through and is stronger because of it. I want others to know they can make it through tough times, too.”
Corey cites her supportive family as a source of her strength and hopes to spread her message of kindness and tolerance to those without a support system.
“Transgender people deserve the same rights as every other human — they know what it feels like to be hurt and rejected, and are still the bravest warriors I know and some of the most beautiful souls in the world,” says Corey. #TransWeek
