“I’ve never in my life had mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving,” said Debbie Himmler, who grew up in Cincinnati, where she still lives today. Instead, Debbie’s oma made noodles, draping them over dining chairs to dry, then flipping them in a big frying pan with bread crumbs and butter. Her grandparents were born in southwest Germany. On their #Thanksgiving table, American standards — turkey, gravy, sweet potatoes — mingled along with rotkraut, a tangy and bitter dish of pickled red cabbage. Today, at 60, Debbie has taken on the role of host. And the meal keeps changing. Several years ago her daughter’s in-laws, who are of Filipino descent, brought lumpia (spring rolls) to sit alongside the rotkraut on her #Thanksgiving table. Americans all come from somewhere, and their journeys are reflected in the food they or their descendants eat. @nytfood asked 15 families from across the country to show us the holiday dishes they make that speak most eloquently about their traditions. What does #TheAmericanThanksgiving look like to you? Visit the link in our profile to get the #recipe for #rotkraut, photographed here by @leslyedavis.
