Today, Pfc. Wilbur C. Mattern, Company M, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, was laid to rest after he went missing in action on Betio, an island involved in the Battle of Tarawa.

The Defense POW / MIA Accounting Agency​ recovered his remains earlier this year. Their mission is to search for missing personnel from past and recent conflicts.
