And now, in an excerpt from the beautiful exhibition catalog, Michael Schmidt expounds on this most-remarkable gown: "I designed this dress with burlesque icon Dita Von Teese in mind. The style of the gown is a nod toward's Dita's flair for classic Hollywood glamour, but is achieved through futuristic means. The gown is inspired loosely by the mathematical formula of the golden ration, a spiral that is said to quantify ideal proportions of beauty. I worked with architect Francis Bitoni, who took my sketches of the gown and it's articulated joints and transform them into digital code. This code became the source material for the 3D-printing process, which was executed by the company Shapeways @shapeways. The dress is unique in that it achieves malleability due to 3000 articulated joints, rendered within the printing process itself. Shapeways utilized selective laser sintering to print the gown in white nylon, which we then dyed and embellished by hand with over 12,000 Swarovski @swarovski crystals. The gown debuted in March 2013 at the Ace Hotel New York @acehotel. Due to the ensuing press attention, it has been seen by more than a billion people on six continents." To see the dress in motion (and yes it does move!) cut-and-paste the link at bottom to see an entrancing video (with mesmerizing music by Armen Ra @armenra).
