Photo by @Tim Laman. Another shot from my new @ナショナルジオグラフィック magazine story “Orangutans – Out on a Limb”. This spectacular adult male orangutan, cared for at the International Animal Rescue (IAR) center in Ketapang, Indonesia, can sadly never be released into the wild. He is a victim of people’s ill-conceived ideas of keeping orangutans as pets (illegal of course, but still a huge problem). People may think a baby orangutan is an adorable pet, but what about when they grow into a 90KG adult male who doesn’t have the skills to survive in the wild and is too dangerous to release? He is committed to a life behind bars. Very sad. We need to protect orangutan habitat so they have space left to survive in the wild. IAR is doing great work trying to train confiscated infants with enough skills to move to the wild when they grow up, but it’s a real challenge.
