What's the appropriate response to being spoken to or treated in a disrespectful manner? If the words come from a stranger you can just walk away and never see the person again. But if the words or actions come from someone you love, like a friend, a partner or a family member, it's a delicate tightrope to walk. You want to set your boundaries and stand up for how you deserve to be treated. You don't want to lie down and be a doormat. But you also want to maintain the love and trust. You want to express yourself in a manner that has the possibility of bringing you closer together, not driving a wedge further between you. There aren't any easy answers. What offends one person may not offend another. All we can really do is be brave enough to speak out truth with the gentle strength of emotional awareness and then have faith that the other person will have a heart and soul big enough to listen. We are so sensitive, so fragile, especially the ones who put on a big show about being tough, sometimes they're the most sensitive. We are resilient and have so much capacity for love that's it's a miracle every day. ?
