Eduardo García received an ice bath at a checkpoint during the first day of La Ruta de Los Conquistadores, a #mountainbike race in Costa Rica that is marketed as the world’s toughest. In the early days, the race started at the Pacific Ocean and went clear across Costa Rica to the Caribbean Sea, following a compilation of routes taken by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. But Costa Rica — famed for its raw beauty, with its lush foliage, multicolored macaws and fog-covered mountains — has grown significantly since La Ruta’s debut race in 1993. More buildings. More highways. More cars. The race this November totaled 135 miles, about the length of a long stage of the Tour de France. But it’s not the distance that makes La Ruta so painful — it's the terrain. This year, the organizer even added an improbable climb up the side of a mountain. Visit the link in our profile to see images of the world’s toughest bike race by @scottymacphoto. #?
