This is a Nat (Spirit) Burmese Buddhist / Hindu festival, close to Mt. Popa in Myanmar. Nats were first established in Burma by King Anawratha of Bagan who first tried to outlaw them.
Shamans dress up and become one of the 37 nat spirits - and act out the ancient stories to music.
Worshipers become entranced and ask the spirits for favors for the future year, truly believing the shamans are the spirits. Giving money or other items like liquor or food. Every rural village has a Nat Shrine.
Nats are animistic, forest and or mountain guardians, and they are linked to the natural world.
Much of our world has lost our cultural spiritual connections to nature. I have searched for these connections throughout my travels.
