The Enlightenment Gallery opened in 2003, restored back to its 1820s splendour. It’s one of the most-visited rooms in the Museum, and is home to over 4,000 objects from all over the world.
Here you can see the space in 1875. The objects in the gallery have changed dramatically over the years – it initially housed King George III’s book collection, and was known as the King’s Library. The objects currently on show explain how people in Europe understood the world in the ‘Age of Enlightenment’ – the time when the Museum was founded. This means the objects range from books and porcelain to marble sculpture and natural history specimens – there’s even a ‘mermaid’!
