Serena Guen, a London-based magazine founder, felt compelled to help those driven out of Syria by civil war. She brought together a network of chefs for a charity dinner one night in October — then things with Cook For Syria (@cookforsyria) took off. “Around 150 restaurants across London modified signature dishes with a Syrian twist and gave 2 pounds per order to UNICEF’s Syria relief appeal,” says Serena, one of the nonprofit’s co-founders. Helping spread the word was co-founder @clerkenwellboyec1, a restaurant critic. “As we started collecting #CookForSyria-inspired recipes and the stories behind them, it made sense to compile these into a cookbook,” he says. “This crisis will be continuing a lot longer than 2017,” Serena says. All proceeds from the book will be donated to UNICEF’s Children of Syria Fund. “To date, Syria has lost four decades of progress already and will take years to rebuild. It is everyone’s responsibility to help.”
