“God's Light Show”. The aurora borealis illuminates Olstind Mountain in Reinefjord, Lofoten archipelago. Arctic Norway. The northern lights must have been as awe inspiring to the first settlers of the Lofoten archipelago 11,000 years ago as they are to any visitor today. It is 120 years since Norwegian Kristian Birkeland, the “father of modern auroral science,” suggested the theory that electrons from sunspots triggered auroras.
