On my first working trip of the year rereading this brilliant book by Suzanne Massie "Land of the firebird ". Back in 2011 I sent this book to 45 most reknowned designers in the world so that they fall in love with the Russia I know and create a one of a kind fairytale dress for the Love Ball hosted by my friend Valentino. So many beautiful memories are brought back of this unforgettable event, people I met and befriended organising it as well as becoming a pen pals with Suzanne herself. Suzanne's love for Russia came from songs and fairytales that she first heard from her mother, who has spent six years living in Russia. This book grew from lectures that she gave at the Metropolitan museum of Art and tells history of Russia from beginning to just before revolution. This book in sigle volume gives a sense of the whole, now vanished culture of old Russia that precedes what we know of Russia today - the faith, art, ballet, music, architecture and more. In Suzanne's own words "Nations like individuals, have the right to be judged not only on their faults and failings, but also on their achievements and glories". I think these words resonate more than ever today. The first book I fell in love with by Suzanne was "Pavlovsk" - another incredible book I highly recommend to all of you.
