Video by @coreyrichproductions | There’s a reason that Ashima Shiraishi (@白石阿島) was nominated as a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year—she’s been pushing the limits of rock climbing, and redefining what’s possible for women in her sport. This 15-year-old phenom from New York City started climbing in Central Park when she was 6 years old, and last year she climbed two V15 boulder problems—a first among females. I was fortunate enough to direct a video profile of Ashima last year in Thailand, where she went deep-water soloing on karst towers high above the Andaman Sea. At the heart of what drives her isn’t just the pursuit of difficulty—it’s a love of just swinging around, climbing rock, and having fun.
