Weekend plans: Visit our exhibition about bird poop before it closes on January 29. Yes, bird poop. The exhibition tells the story of John Norie's unique Marine Atlas, a book of sea charts dating to the early 19th century. His atlas is a beautiful example of the chart-maker's art, from a time when paper charts were the best GPS available.
It also introduces us to the guano trade, the mining and trade of valuable Peruvian seabird droppings. The poop was used as fertilizer to enrich the soil in farmers' fields. The search for guano sent us far from home on dangerous and, frankly, stinky journeys.
Can't visit in person? Click the link in our profile (http://s.si.edu/NorieAtlas) to explore our online exhibition.
